Lessons from Phil Ford’s Dad

In a Business Class interview a few years ago,  I had the pleasure of talking with former Carolina basketball player and coach, Phil Ford.    Phil is a UNC graduate, played basketball there, coached there under Dean Smith and Bill Guthredge and is now Assistant Coach for the Charlotte Bobcats.

During the interview, we were looking for parallels – lessons from the court that could be applied in business.     The inteview took place around Father’s Day, so we also talked about lessons he had learned from his Dad – lessons that had helped in his career.

These included the importance of respect and never giving up.

Lessons he hopes to pass along to his kids?    Coach Ford talked about the importance respecting every human being.  And of making good decisions – being strong and doing what you think is right despite peer pressure. And about the importance of holding yourself responsible for whatever decisions you make.

He talked about a question his children ask when they are trying to make a choice, “What would Jesus do?”

Listen to Coach Ford tell the story right here in this 5 minute excerpt from our interview.

Great tips for us as managers and as human beings.

What lessons did you learn from your Dad?  Lessons that have helped you be a better manager?

    Jan,

Terrific interview with Coach Ford. The teaching of manners really rang true for me. That is one item my parents and especially my father impressed upon me. Especially, opening doors and holding chairs at the dinner table for ladies.

You really did a great job with Father’s Day on your site with all the interviews and artilces.

    Thanks for sharing with us.
