We have celebrated the wisdom of Coach John Wooden all week.      Fabulous morale and productivity building tips for results oriented managers.

Here are two more important pieces of Wooden wisdom which we saved for Father’s Day Week  – his Seven Point Creed and his Two Sets of Threes.

When  John Wooden graduated from grammar school, his Dad, Joshua Wooden, gave him the Seven Point Creed.  And from what I’ve read and heard, he passed this creed along to all his students and players.

  1. Be true to yourself.
  2. Make each day your masterpiece.
  3. Help others.
  4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
  5. Make friendship a fine art.
  6. Build a shelter against a rainy day.
  7. Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.

You can watch and listen to Coach Wooden share this by clicking on Seven Point Creed in the Favorite Maxims section of the official Coach Wooden website.

While there, you can also click on The Two Sets of Threes which Joshua Wooden also gave his sons and Coach Wooden passed these along to students and players.

  1. Don’t lie
  2. Don’t cheat *
  3. Don’t steal

* His dad always said that if you don’t lie, you won’t have to remember what you said.

  1. Don’t whine
  2. Don’t complain
  3. Don’t make excuses -  just do the best you can

With the list of seven and the two sets of threes,  the Woodens demonstrate two Business Class musts for success in management.

  1.  Taking a stand.
  2.  Making expectations clear from the start.

When a manager does both of these things, he immediately gets rid of much of the mess that tends to get in the way of a team’s success.
