Quote of the Week: Silly & Intelligent

This week’s quote is from Ludwig Wittgenstein, a fascinating philosopher who lived from 1889 – 1951.

If people never did silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done.

Does this mean Wittgenstein would have supported silly April Fools pranks and celebrations like Sorry Charlie Day and Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day?    Silliness that leads to laughter.  De-stressing us.  Connecting us.  Lightening our load.   Making room for more intelligent thinking.

Or was this a relativity message?  That perhaps the intelligent things people do wouldn’t seem so intelligent if not offset by the silly things they do  – the ones that show a lack of wisdom or good sense.

Or was he referring to silly mistakes from which brilliant ideas or products evolve?

Or did he intend his message as support for the ideas or dreams we have that others say are silly or foolish?

Or did he mean something else?

My guess is that there is no one right answer.  A friend said about Wittgenstein:  “He once said he felt as though he were writing for people who would think in a different way, breathe a different air of life, from that of present-day men.”  Wikipedia

So feel free to be silly with your interpretation of this quote, on April Fool’s Day and beyond.

Post this quote as as a reminder to be silly.  To think in a different way.  To breathe a different air of life.

Excellent for morale, productivity and overall performance.
