Quote of the Week: Mess in the Middle

By: Jan Bolick
June 27, 2011

June 30 marks the middle of 2011, and so our featured quote is:

Hopefully you aren’t dealing with a mess. But if you are,  this quote plus Other Resources on this page, can help you get out of the mess and boost morale and productivity in the process.

If you aren’t dealing with a mess right now – good for you!   These materials will come in handy later when you will  – unless you’re superhuman – have to deal with a mess.

I heard  Rosabeth Moss Canter say, “Everything is a mess in the middle” about 25 years ago and the phrase has been a valuable tool to me over and over through the years whenever I’ve found myself or my team  in the middle of a project or situation that started out just fine and then became a mess somewhere in the middle.

Has that ever happened to you?

When it happens to me, people like Nervous Nellie, Self-Doubting Sally or Panicked Polly tend to show up.

Do you have goons “on your team” like those three that fill  your mind with goop like, “You aren’t qualifed to do this. Nobody in this office is qualified. Why are you even doing it anyway? It was a stupid idea.”

“Everything is a mess in the middle” has  a way of  saving people from those goons, freeing  them  from the mental and emotional mess, so that they can  focus on finding their way out of the REAL mess and push through the middle to the end.

Read that sentence again.  It’s important.

We invite you to print and/or post the above quote. Use it as background or wallpaper for your computer. Instructions below. Feel free to send it to colleagues, family and friends.
