Quote of the Week: Mess in the Middle
By: Jan BolickThis week marks the middle of the calendar year.* And so our featured quote is one I heard from Rosabeth Moss Canter about 25 years ago. 
This quote has been a valuable tool over the years whenever I’ve found myself in the middle of a project or situation that started out just fine and then became a mess.
Has that ever happened to you?
When it happens to me, I get nervous. Sometimes panic screeches in. And then there’s that nasty self-doubt. The goon “on my team” that fills my mind with goop like, “You aren’t qualifed to do this. Nobody in this office is qualified. Why are you even doing it anyway? It was a stupid idea.”
Rosabeth Moss Kanter has frequently saved me from all of that, freeing me from the mental and emotional mess, so that I could focus on finding my way out of the real mess and push through the middle to the end.
I highly recommend….when in such a jam:

Remember the quote.

Say it out loud to yourself and any others involved in the mess.

Take a few deep breaths – and a break if needed.
-
Re-focus on the desired outcome.
-
Review your plan.
-
Make adjustments if needed.
-
And then – do something. Take action to get out of the mess in the middle.
