10 Ideas for New Endings

10 by 10 on Tuesdays

This week’s quick list* is a companion piece to our Quote of the Week for Groundhog Day.

Botches can send us underground, hiding out with the hogs…keeping us from shining the way that we could.  It could be a botched presentation.  Or conversation.  Or relationship.  Or deadline.  Or a missed goal.  Or wayward resolution.

Some people worry more than they  should.

Some people should worry more than they do.  Like Phil, the weatherman (played by Bill Murray) in Groundhog Day  Read more

10 Times to Get Off the Path

10 by 10 on Tuesdays

This week’s Quick List is a companion piece to our Quote of the Week: On Paths & Trails which is a perfect segue from last week’s Quote of the Week for MLK Day.  Dr. King didn’t like the path we were on – didn’t like where it was leading.  He had a dream of something different and better.  And so he got off the path.  And he left a trail.

There are certainly times that it is more efficient, more logical to follow a path that’s already in place.  And then there are other times….

Yesterday we asked the question:  “When do you think it’s a good idea to get off the current path to forge a new trail?”

And we promised to post a few ideas on this in:   “10 Times To Get Off the Path”.

Quote of the Week: On Paths & Trails

Quote of the Week subscriber, Kathy Peppers is the Business Office Manager at Lake Martin Community Hospital in Dadeville, Alabama.   She hangs many of the quotes she receives from us outside the door of her office.  People stop to read them.  People seem to learn from them.  Some people even act differently – in a positive way.  And other people have noticed the difference.

Another sign of impact and engagement… one of Kathy’s team members brought in a quote she had received from a friend. Kathy did two things.  She posted the quote on her wall and she sent it to me.

Thank you, Kathy.  I was thrilled to receive it.  And as it turns out, it’s a perfect segue from last week’s Quote of the Week for MLK Day.  Dr. King didn’t like the path we were on – didn’t like where it was leading.  He had a dream of something different and better.  And so he got off the path.  And left a trail.

There are certainly times that it is more efficient, more logical to follow a path that’s already in place.  And then there are other times….

When do you think it’s a good idea to get off the current path to forge a new trail?

The paths you are on right now…which ones should you stay on?  Which ones should you leave?

Tomorrow we will post a few ideas on this in:   “10 Times To Get Off the Path”.

Meanwhile – use the above quote as background or wallpaper for your computer with just three clicks. Read more

A fun and easy celebration.

Just bring in a few bags or a can.

Or a machine!*

Then you could celebrate every day.

After all the month of January is National Popcorn Month.  And after that, we are all kind of “excuses” will pop into your head.

Customers will love it.  So will your staff.

A great boost for morale and productivity.

*We’ve seen them at a variety of stores – table top models for as little as $49.99.  Just be sure to check the fire codes in your office.

Fire Department Show Signs of Good Business

January 4, 2012 · Filed Under Be a Better Manager · Comment

Like many of us, the Chapel Hill Fire Department puts up a wreath as part of their holiday décor.   For the past ten years, the wreath at the fire department has included a sign (below) which shows many signs of good business.

Chief Deputy Matt Lawrence is in charge of the “Keep the Wreath Green” campaign designed to remind citizens of the dangers of the holiday season and to urge them to do their part in preventing deadly home fires.

To help citizens do their part, the fire department pumps out information – online, in the media and at Christmas tree lots. Sure. Sure. We think we know all that stuff. But it’s a hectic time and all it takes is one hurried holiday moment.

Lawrence says, “It’s a terrible thing to go through at any time, but especially during the holidays.”

The fire department’s green wreath, illuminated with green lights, went up on December 1.

It stayed green for 21 days. Read more

Quote of the Week: The Main Thing

Only 17 days til Hanukkah,  21 days til Christmas, 22 days til Kwanzaa, and only 27 days left in the year.

It can be a wacky time.  Running in a million directions.  Too many directions.   Not getting anything done and/or not doing it well.

This week’s quote is a great reminder for leaders everywhere.

What IS the main thing?

It’s a tough question.  We’re responsible for so many things.  How in the world can we identify THE main thing?
