How Do You Manage Mistakes?

August 4, 2009 · Filed Under Be a Better Manager, Get 2 Goal, Serious About Service · 4 Comments

If you are like many managers and business owners, you are working hard to boost morale and productivity – trying to make the most of this tough year.

It’s extra hard to do during the dog days of summer and so at Business Class, we are continuing our focus on beating the heat - literally and figuratively.

If you read our July posts (archives available bottom of side bar), you know we are a big advocate of injecting a bit (or a lot) of fun into the normal work week. Mainly for the fun and sanity preserving impact. The resulting boost in morale, productivity and even customer loyalty are big bonuses too.

There are lots of “excuses” for doing this in August. Just take a look at the list of celebrations below. Some silly. Some serious.

In addition to these, we have dedicated the month of August to a very serious issue – and that is Mistake Management.

All month long, we will be sharing stories about how organizations handle mistakes.

How do you and your company manage mistakes?

Share your comments (in Comments box below or send an e-mail to jan@businessclassinc.com). And come back often throughout August to read about all the many ways to manage mistakes and the impact on morale, productivity and customer loyalty.

Which Dog is Winning?

July 1, 2009 · Filed Under Be a Better Manager, Get 2 Goal, Serious About Service · Comment

If you are fighting the dog days of summer, hoping to block their affect on morale and productivity so you can make the most of this tough year, here’s something to read, ponder and share.

A Native American Elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner:

“Inside of me there are two dogs.
One of the dogs is mean and evil.
The other dog is good.
The mean dog fights with the good dog all the time.”

When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied,

“The one I feed the most.”

It’s true for the “dogs” that live outside of us as well. We can come up with good and bad in most every person, action, situation, etc. The one we dwell upon, think about, talk about or “feed” the most – that’s the one that wins. And when it’s the mean dog that wins, it’s hard not to lose morale and productivity.

Pass this story along to your colleagures. Talk about it. Print (see below) and post it on the walls. Post it on your computer (see below). Post it everywhere as a reminder that the dog you feed the most will win.
