A News/Article Series for Business Professionals - October 19, 2007

By Jan Bolick

October 24 is my sister’s birthday.

When we were little, we each got a present on the other's birthday. Those days are long gone.

BUT this year - there is a way for all of us to get a present on her birthday because October 24 is also National Take Back Your Time Day.

I'm sending this article 5 days in advance so you have time to send her a really nice present :) AND to think about your own.

Feature:
Take It Back

A Poem by Jan Bolick

Rush rush
Hurry hurry
Still behind
Late for a meeting
Heart racing
Boss waiting
Stacks of paper
Staffers waiting
100 Emails
Bottleneck
Bulging briefcase
Car pool
Step on it, Mister
Don’t miss the light
Kids waiting
Drive thru
Eat in the car
Soccer game
On the sideline
Phone in hand
Cheer the team
Return phone call
Cheer the team
Return next call
Homework
Load of laundry
Fall into bed
Aching head

Does any of that ring true for you?

Take it back.
It’s yours.
Really.

Here is a favorite Business Class quote from Carl Sandburg:

"Time is the coin of your life.
It’s the only coin you have and only you
can determine how it will be spent.
Be careful lest you let other people
spend it for you."

It IS your time.

Yet it’s so easy to get caught up in the traffic and e-mail and voice mail and rush rush push push hurry hurry.

Apparently it’s happening nationwide because October 24 has been declared National Take Back Your Time Day.

Use that as a nudge.

Block some time on your October 24 calendar. Just ten minutes would be good. An hour even better. Or be bold and block off the whole day.

Between now and then - think about things you’ve been wishing you had time to do. Some of you will be able to make a very long list. That’s good.

By the end of the day on Tuesday, decide what you will do to observe Take Back Your Time Day and get ready to enjoy your present.
