Quote of the Week for Groundhog Day*

January 30, 2012 · Filed Under Be a Better Manager, Get 2 Goal, Quote of the Week · Comment

Thanks again and again to longtime Business Class subscriber, Mark Young at Baby Boomer Talk Online ,  for sharing this quote a year and a half ago.  Since then it has been the #1 Quote of the Week (in terms of traffic) and several readers have told me about the impact it has had on them and their teammates.  It has been a real catalyst for change for many.  Now is a good time to feature it again for reasons indicated in the title, added artwork and comments below.

Most of us have something hidden in the shadows somewhere.   Something we wish we could do over.  Something that is making us or someone on our team go underground.  Or cower in a corner a bit.  Keeping us – and them -  from really shining the way that we and they could.

It could be a botched presentation.  Or conversation.  Or relationship.  Or deadline.  Or a missed goal.  Or wayward resolution.

And speaking of resolutions… Read more

Quote of the Week: On Paths & Trails

Quote of the Week subscriber, Kathy Peppers is the Business Office Manager at Lake Martin Community Hospital in Dadeville, Alabama.   She hangs many of the quotes she receives from us outside the door of her office.  People stop to read them.  People seem to learn from them.  Some people even act differently – in a positive way.  And other people have noticed the difference.

Another sign of impact and engagement… one of Kathy’s team members brought in a quote she had received from a friend. Kathy did two things.  She posted the quote on her wall and she sent it to me.

Thank you, Kathy.  I was thrilled to receive it.  And as it turns out, it’s a perfect segue from last week’s Quote of the Week for MLK Day.  Dr. King didn’t like the path we were on – didn’t like where it was leading.  He had a dream of something different and better.  And so he got off the path.  And left a trail.

There are certainly times that it is more efficient, more logical to follow a path that’s already in place.  And then there are other times….

When do you think it’s a good idea to get off the current path to forge a new trail?

The paths you are on right now…which ones should you stay on?  Which ones should you leave?

Tomorrow we will post a few ideas on this in:   “10 Times To Get Off the Path”.

Quote of the Week for MLK Day

From our Quote of the Week for January 2:  Lead with intention.

From our Quote of the Week for January 9:  As a leader, you rarely have certainty but you should always have clarity.

Dr. Martin Luther King led with intention.  He led with clarity.  He had a clear vision – he had a dream.

Quote of the Week: Leading with certainty vs clarity

Excerpt from last week’s quote commentary:

With the number of possible paths and destinations seeming to expand exponentially by the moment, it’s easier than ever to go absolutely nowhere. And for morale and productivity to take a deep dive of despair.  More than ever, we need leaders to take charge, cut through the muck and “lead with intention.

The thought of this and the resulting pressure is enough to cause many leaders to take a deep dive into a big pile of paperwork or a long series of unproductive meetings.

Both are good places to “hide”.  Both are good ways to avoid taking charge.

None of US would ever do that though, would we?

I didn’t admit it for a long time – mainly because I didn’t realize it.   Instead I thought the meetings and papers (reports, surveys, research) were going to provide the information needed to be certain we chose the right path.  To be certain that we went at the right time and with the right people.  To be certain that we did the right things along the way.

And eventually I became certain that looking for certainty got us the same place as hiding or avoiding.  Or doing absolutely nothing.

It got us absolutely nowhere.

This week’s quote reminds us what to seek instead.

Tomorrow we will post 10 Tips for Finding & Keeping Clarity.

Quote of the Week for the Last Week of 2011

What will you do with the final week of 2011?

Many will use it as a final five day push to make miscellaneous goals and deadlines.

Some will beat themselves up or criticize others for things that didn’t go well.

Some may convert these negatives into an opportunity…creating new goals and resolutions that are aligned with their vision for a better future.

This week’s quote reminds us of another vital element for reflection and for the creation of that vision.

So busy trying to make goals and problem solve, we often forget to be thankful for all the good that surrounds us.  For all the good we have done.  For all the good others have done.

Sharing that gratitude with others does everything listed in this week’s quote.  And all of that provides a big boost to morale and productivity.

As we transition from 2011 into 2012, what if we all lead the way with gratitude? Read more

Quote of the Week: Sprinkles Everywhere

Working, shopping, wrapping, decorating, cooking, partying…it’s enough to make a person sick.
And tired and stressed and maybe even a bit Scrooge-like.
Terrible for the morale and productivity of any person, any leader, any team.

This week’s quote (below) stems from a story that has contributed to the prevention and reversal of much Scrooge-like behavior over the years.    Because of that, it has become a tradition to share it far and wide.

let there be sprinkles everywhere

Quote of the Week: Remember Hamlet’s Ham

Tis the season for strategic planning and holiday cooking – a perfect time to re-visit the story about Hamlet’s ham.  It serves  as a reminder that a simple question can change the way we do business. Or the way we cook a ham.

And it’s a story that left a jingle in Jan’s head – a jingle that’s become our quote of the week:

Remember Hamlet's ham

For it to make sense, you’ll need to read the story.  It’s a good one.  Here’s a link to:  The End of Hamlet’s Ham

Quote of the Week: The Main Thing

Only 17 days til Hanukkah,  21 days til Christmas, 22 days til Kwanzaa, and only 27 days left in the year.

It can be a wacky time.  Running in a million directions.  Too many directions.   Not getting anything done and/or not doing it well.

This week’s quote is a great reminder for leaders everywhere.

What IS the main thing?

It’s a tough question.  We’re responsible for so many things.  How in the world can we identify THE main thing?
