October 24 is Take Back Your Time Day.

In celebration, I pulled out a poem written several years ago and updated it a bit.

10 Great Bosses

October 17, 2011 · Filed Under Be a Better Manager, Quick List · Comment

This week’s 10 by 10 on Tuesdays is a day early – in celebration of National Boss Day.

We think Boss Day is a great day to thank bosses everywhere.  And it’s a great day to remind ourselves of the duty we have  as bosses to get better at it.  One great way to do that is to observe other bosses.

Here are 10 stories about inspirational bosses.  By the way  – I highly doubt that these bosses are (or were) inspirational every minute of every day. More likely it occurred (or occurs) in bits and bites. And it seems to be about…well…read these stories and see what you think.   And then – will you add a story or two about bosses you’ve admired? Quote of the Week: #1 Killer of Productivity

The #1 killer of productivity is unclear expectations. Make yours clear.

Do you make expectations clear?

Most leaders believe they do.

Funny thing though…most people say their manager’s expectations are about as clear as a ghost.

Hmm…what to do about this obstacle illusion?

And what about your customers? Read more

You still need enough courage to visit him.   And have enough courage to step up and lead in unique ways.

You’ll be glad you did.  Your team will be too.

Welcome Miami Fans

We were so impressed with the show of class at Notre Dame in 2006, that we wanted to spread the word. We also wanted to make it easy for businesses to implement and so we created a few game day tools for businesses. One of them – ready-to-go welcome signs.

This weekend, Carolina plays the University of Miami.

We suggest that businesses in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area post welcoming signs in the door, windows and/or counter tops. The one we’ve created looks like this: Read more

Quote of the Week: Dancing with Skeletons

So much going on this week that it was hard to choose.  For many reasons, we chose…

If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you might as well make him dance.

Note:  Many people consider their colleagues as family.  If that isn’t the case in your organization, replace the word “family” with “office”, “company”,  “department” or delete the word altogether.

As far as getting rid of a skeleton…..

Maybe no one will know.   For a little while anyway.

But pretty soon, Read more

National Kick Butt Day is on October 11.

How to celebrate?

Offer free kickboxing classes to those who reach their sales goal today or this week.

Or to those who collect a certain dollar amount of receivables.

Or any other activity that will help you and them get 2 goal.

All great for the bottom line. Read more

Wisdom from Christopher Columbus

discovery

October 12 is Columbus Day.  This year it is being celebrated on Monday, October 10.

When I think of Christopher Columbus, five words flash through my brain. “I have a decided heart.”

These words are from Andy Andrews book, The Travelers Gift: Seven Decisions That Determine Personal Success.*

Each “decision” is discovered by David, who was once a successful executive, lost his job and is in a state of desperation. After months of struggle, he finds himself on a “journey”, during which he meets seven people, each of whom teach him a “decision” needed for success.

Wisdom from Steve Jobs

October 6, 2011 · Filed Under Be a Better Manager, Get 2 Goal · Comment

To family, friends and colleagues of Steve Jobs…

we are so sorry for your loss and hope you will soon find peace in the many fond memories.

He gave so much to the world while he was here on this earth….

And has left so much behind.

Including much wisdom.

This quote came from Mark Young, owner of  BabyBoomerTalkOnline, who sends out an inspirational quote each day. Here is the one he sent today:

“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:

‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something…almost everything-all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure-these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.”

Steve Jobs

He included a link to Steve Jobs commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005.  And so I clicked on it.  And watched.  For 14 minutes.  Mesmerized.  An unbelievable story.

Some of which I knew.  But…

…let’s just say it helped me connect a few dots.

I hope you’ll watch it (below). Read more
