10 Gift Ideas for Administrative Professionals – Revised 2012

Revised April 2012.

Administrative Professionals Day is Wednesday, April 25.  Actually – you can celebrate longer than a day since the entire week of April 23 is Administrative Professionals Week.

The  International Association of Administrative Professionals is encouraging people to widen the scope of celebration to include ALL office professionals.  Here is a note from their site:

For Administrative Professionals Day 2011, we’re veering away from the traditional celebration of the day which is centered on administrative professionals. The recession has hit everyone in the office. Downsizing has forced all of us to pull together and work harder, not just the administrative professionals in the workplace. IAAP recognizes the hard work and sacrifice from everyone. This year, celebrate all office professionals.

It’s YOUR office so you get to choose!  Celebrate as long and as widely as you like.   Here are ten ways to show your appreciation to individuals on your team.

Quote of the Week: The Way You Talk to Yourself

April 11, 2011 · Filed Under 2 Little Time, Be a Better Manager, Get 2 Goal, Quote of the Week · Comment

Many of us complain about the mean, insensitive things our colleagues say to us.   No wonder morale and productivity are in the dumpster, right?    Engagement?  What a joke!    On a serious note, how often do you stop and listen to yourself?

Quote: If a friend talked to you the way you sometimes talk to yourself...

Listen to yourself this week.   Keep a Wordpad or real pad list of the mean, critical, judgmental things you say to yourself.  You may be shocked at how hard you are on you.

What to do if you have a really long list? Read more

10 X 4 Snacks to Help Good Dogs Win

April 5, 2011 · Filed Under 2 Little Time, Be a Better Manager, Get 2 Goal, Quick List · Comment

10 by 10 on TuesdaysThis week’s Quick List* is a companion piece to our Quote of the Week: Which dog is winning? which is based on this story:

A Native American Elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner:

“Inside of me there are two dogs.
One of the dogs is mean and evil.
The other dog is good.
The mean dog fights with the good dog all the time.”

When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied,

“The one I feed the most.”

And have you noticed? That mean, evil dog can be REALLY mean. And tough. Sometimes I think I’ve starved him to death and then all of the sudden he attacks out  no where.  And when he wins….he devours all morale and productivity in sight.

To keep that from happening, Read more

Quote of the Week: Which dog is winning?

April 4, 2011 · Filed Under Be a Better Manager, Get 2 Goal, Quote of the Week · Comment

It’s going to be a dogfight tonight between the Butler Bulldogs and the U Conn Huskies.  Both are great teams with great coaches – both worthy of victory.

But that’s not true about all the dogs that will keep fighting long after the National Champion is crowned.   And so our quote this week is a question.

Which dog is winning?

Post it or the story on which it is based (below) on your computer screen (download instructions below).  Also below, see tips for feeding the good dog and starving the mean dog. Read more

April 6 is Sorry Charlie Day

April 3, 2011 · Filed Under Be a Better Manager, Get 2 Goal · Comment

Sorry Charlie Day is on April 6.

It honors those who have been rejected and lived through it. This could be a fun, morale and productivity boosting agenda item for a staff meeting. Use it as a way to open up a discussion of a sales/business rejection in a lighthearted way. Then learn from it and move forward. There’s that “move forward” theme again.
