Did last week’s theme sing to you?

Toooooo much to doooooo…..and not enough time

Here’s an encouraging note that I just read on the Management Toolbox* website:

“20% of our work time is lost doing unnecessary things“*.

Wow! That’s a full day in a 5 day work week. Do we really fritter away that much time? I find that part discouraging. The encouraging part of it is…it’s possible that some of us are doing far more than we really HAVE to do.

If we could dump that stuff, just imagine… Read more

Brainteaser of the Week #39

Use a brainteaser to start, revive or end a meeting. It’s a great way to shift the brain, spark new energy, maybe even cause a giggle or a smile. All of which can help you boost morale and productivity.  This one helps us see how ….better not tell you.  It might give the answer away.

Here is Brainteaser #39:

You are the bus driver. At your first stop, you pick up 29 people. On your second stop, 18 of those 29 people get off, and at the same time 10 new passengers arrive. At your next stop, 3 of those 10 passengers get off, and 13 new passengers come on. On your fourth stop 4 of the remaining 10 passengers get off, 6 of those new 13 passengers get off as well, then 17 new passengers get on. Read more

Theme for the Week: Doing Too Much

July 25, 2010 · Filed Under 2 Little Time, Be a Better Manager · 3 Comments

Are you or someone on your team doing a lot but not getting much done?

A few years ago, Dad and I were working on some projects at home.  I was running here, there and everywhere.  Like the little ball in a pinball machine.  After a while, Dad said:  “Jan, why don’t you read some of that stuff you write?!”

I was busted.  And very honored that he had read “that stuff”, remembered it and recognized when it would come in handy.

For most of us – there is WAY too much to do.  It’s a blessing that we have so many opportunities and choices.  But it can quickly become a curse.  And if someone doesn’t call us on it early (like Dad did), it can become  tough as quicksand to escape.   Read more

Which dog is winning?

Today’s double feature provides reinforcing ideas to help the good dogs win.

The first feature helps with the mean dogs inside our heads.   Operation Mindcrime: Getting the Edge Over Your Head features C.J. and Todd, the Metal Motivators.  An excerpt from their description of the video:

Disciplining your mind is like bridling a beast—and taming the beast requires consistent control of your own head.

 Warning:  Preview for language.
Then grab the popcorn and enjoy this under three minute movie. Read more

10 Ways to Help the Good Dog Win

This week’s Quick List* is a companion piece to our Quote of the Week: Which dog is winning?  and is based on this story:

A Native American Elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner:

“Inside of me there are two dogs.
One of the dogs is mean and evil.
The other dog is good.
The mean dog fights with the good dog all the time.”

When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied,

“The one I feed the most.”

And have you noticed?  That mean, evil dog can be REALLY mean.  And tough.  Sometimes I think I’ve starved him to death and then all of the sudden.  Out of no where.  He attacks.  And when he wins….he devours all morale and productivity in sight.

To keep that from happening, it’s important to load up with the good for the long haul.  And have quick power snacks ready to ward off mean attacks.

Here are 10  ways to do it:  Read more
