Trying to figure out how to handle gift giving this year?

Here is a list of ideas that cost from zero on up.    It’s separated into four categories - food related items, non-food items, donations and other.

For many of the items, we’ve also provided links for browsing and/or shopping.  Yes – you could even get your shopping done right here!

BUT – we are big supporters of buying things locally and encourage you to do the same.

Food & Beverage Items

1. Holiday gift baskets or bags or cans containing one of these or an assortment of:

2. A gift card to a nearby coffee shop like Starbucks or Caribou Coffee.

3. Fruit of the month club

4. Steaks, turkey, ham - just be sure the recipients are meat eaters

5. Meals

Note: see comments #6, 7, 8, 16 & 17, Reader Preferences from our Holiday Gift Giving Survey this topic

Non-Food Items

1. Plants

2. Gas cards (from BP, Exxon)

3. Coffee cups

4. Framed items

5. Cool pens, pencils or pen & pencil sets

6. Cool notepads, business card holders

7. Notecards or stationery

8. Umbrella – especially if they are always losing theirs

9. Fun socks (see reader comments #14 & 15 below)

10. A good book

11. A gift certificate to buy a good book (from a local bookstore)

12. A desk calendar or wall calendar (with a theme in line with their interests)

13. A year’s supply (or a large supply) of something they love but are always out of like pens, post its, legal pads, paper clips, etc

14. Something for their pet

15. Or if you can’t decide, you might find a program in your area like Chamber checks here in Chapel Hill.

A Donation in His/Her Honor

*Note:  These links are to the national organizations.  If you want your donation to stay local, you may need to find a special link for that.

SeeGift Alternatives” in Lisa Flam’s Holiday gift lists shrink, but who makes the cut?

See “Gifts of Time & Service” in Stephanie Lancaster’s Ideas to Make the Holidays Greener.

And of course, always remember that it’s the thought that counts…and a handwritten note that shares those good thoughts may be the most appreciated.

Whatever you choose,  we hope you’ll be “green” with your wrapping.  We like the clever recyclable wrapping offered at www.fabricwrapper.com

We hope this list is a helpful tool for choosing and purchasing gifts for clients and colleagues – maybe even friends and family.

Happy Holidays!
